Toyota Motor Corp. has urged the Philippine government to support local vehicle manufacturing across all technologies, according to a report by Philstar Biz . The Japanese automaker made the call to help strengthen micro, small and medium enterprises and safeguard jobs in the automotive sector.
Toyota emphasized that a broad technology-neutral approach would benefit local suppliers and workers, rather than favoring only electric vehicles or specific fuel types. The company argues that supporting all technologies—including hybrids, internal combustion engines, and alternative fuels—preserves the existing supply chain and allows the industry to transition at a sustainable pace.
The appeal comes as the Philippines develops its automotive industry roadmap, with the government weighing incentives for electric vehicles versus continued support for traditional manufacturing. Toyota's position reflects the broader strategy of many global automakers operating in emerging markets, where infrastructure and consumer demand may not yet fully support a rapid shift to EVs.
