THE Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has transferred 600 inmates from Metro Manila facilities to the Davao Prison and Penal Farm, according to a statement reported by BusinessWorld. The move is part of BuCor’s continuing effort to decongest the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) and prepare for its eventual closure.

Of the 600 inmates, 500 were male inmates from NBP in Muntinlupa City. The transfer aims to reduce overcrowding at the national penitentiary, which has long struggled with congestion and facility limitations. BuCor has been gradually relocating inmates to regional prisons and penal farms across the country.

The Davao Prison and Penal Farm, located in Davao City, is one of the facilities designated to accommodate inmates from NBP. BuCor officials have stated that the decongestion program supports prison reform and improves living conditions for detainees.
